Meaningful consulting and engagement with surrounding residential areas is central to the development of the Fort Garry Campus Plan. A foundational aspect of the Visionary (re)Generation International Design Competition is an understanding that “edge areas” are not rigid boundaries, but transitions that respect and enhance the neighbourhoods that surround the project site.
Competition instructions invite specific consideration of ways Pembina Highway can be improved and transformed for the benefit of the wider community and the city as a whole. Proposals must also give particular consideration to the university’s unique river geography. Competition instructions call for creation of a new riverfront park or promenade space: a “see and be seen” public place that will be inclusive to all. Proposals will also focus on improved access and opportunities for river-related activities in all seasons, and connections along the river that improve access both to the campus and surrounding communities.
